How to: Move more throughout the day
Chances are, you’re reading this blog because you’re interested in living a healthy, well-balanced life. And while the food you eat plays such a huge role in achieving that, there are many other pieces that go into it.
Here at Ultimate Paleo Guide, Paleo is much more than just a diet. A diet is something that is temporary and unsustainable over the long run. We much prefer to see Paleo as a lifestyle. And part of that ideology encompasses aspects outside of food - like sleep, stress management, and movement.
Movement is a big one - especially in our society where most of us are sitting in front ...

Beyond the Scale
When I was in college, I would go the rec center every day. I had a specific routine: 30 minutes of cardio, 10 minutes of “abs”, then I’d step on the scale.
I’d do this almost every single day.
If the number was lower than the day before, my whole day was instantly better. If the number was the same or higher, I’d be bummed for the rest of the day.
I literally remember thinking to myself, “If only I could get under 120 pounds, I’ll be happy.”
Looking back, I wish I could shake some sense into my twenty-something self.
What a waste.
For so long, our society has been bombarded with the message that skinnier is better. Our ...

Alkaline Water: Everything You Need to Know
Alkaline water - what the heck is it?
I’ll be honest...I’ve heard talk about this stuff. I’ve seen it in the store. But, before diving into the research for this article, I pretty much knew nothing about it. If you’ve found yourself in the same boat, I’d definitely encourage you to keep reading. I’m on a mission to answer all of your questions!
First things first…
What is alkaline water?
You may have to think back to your middle school science class to remember what exactly “alkaline” means. As you probably learned way back then, alkaline means that the pH of a solution is above 7 - which is to say that this solution is more “basic” ...

Must Watch: Food Documentaries on Netflix
Must Watch Food Documentaries on Netflix
So you’ve watched all the episodes of The Office, Parks and Rec, and you might have binged watched Stranger Things in a weekend.
(Oh, is that just me?)
Either way, if you’re on the hunt for something new to watch, I’ve got you covered. Here are some of my favorite food documentaries on Netflix.
Fed Up
This documentary played a major role in my decision to adopt a Paleo lifestyle. A 2014 documentary narrated by Katie Couric, Fed Up is described as “an examination of America's obesity epidemic and the food industry's role in aggravating it.”
Food Choices
The food we choose to eat ...

Nerd Fitness Releases Paleo Central – A Paleo Diet App For iOS
Nerd Fitness just released it's first app - a paleo diet focused app named "Paleo Central."
The focus of the app is a database of over 4,000 words and foods that Paleo Central will either tell you if it's paleo or not. The app is built with speed in mind as you can tell whether or not the food is paleo thanks to a green thumbs up sign or a red thumbs down sign. Can't get any easier than that.
Right now, the basic functions are...well..pretty basic, but they're looking to iterate and develop more down the road.
As of right now, Paleo Central is only available on iOS.

Paleo Diet Tweaks for Performance Athletes
The requirements of athletes can vary based on the individual themselves, his or her sport, and the level of activity. A competitive CrossFitter will have different needs than that of a marathon runner or Power Lifter. However, there is a very similar foundation and despite these differences, all athletes share a couple things: optimizing performance and recovery.
It is often thought that the Paleo diet is only geared towards those who want to lose weight and improve longevity. But it is also great for athletes; it just needs to be adjusted accordingly. The Paleo diet is full of high-quality proteins which contain essential amino acids for ...

The Role of Protein and Recovery
When we break down the food we eat, it is most simply broken down into micronutrients and macronutrients. These nutrients are necessary for proper hormone function, growth and energy.
Micronutrients – such as vitamins and minerals – are the nutrients your body needs in small amounts, but they have a big impact.
Macronutrients – protein, carbohydrate, and fat – are the nutrients your body needs in larger amounts that help make up calories and provide energy.
While both are important, macronutrients are what play the biggest role in recovery. They are the building blocks providing our bodies’ with energy and helping fuel/rebuild our muscles ...

Memorial Day Survival Guide
I love those middle months where spring turns into summer.
The climate changing, bringing in a slightly warmer breeze; farmers markets in full swing; the smell of the grill getting fired up regardless of the day or time.
This is why Memorial Day is one of my favorite holidays.
I love Memorial Day (and summertime in general) because of all the great “summer foods”. Between grilled burgers and meat to fresh fruits, veggies and salads, it is all about what is fresh. I love getting together with a group of friends, playing a friendly game or two of sand volleyball, and grilling up our favorite meats and veggies. Everyone can bring his or ...

8 Ways to Sustain a Paleo Lifestyle
We know that living a paleo lifestyle can be beneficial for a number of reasons, but sometimes staying on track can be difficult. Long hours, cravings and lack of choices tend to get in the way. Here are eight easy tips to help you sustain a paleo lifestyle without feeling deprived, hungry or unsatisfied.
Don’t Limit Carbohydrates Too Much
Yes, on the paleo diet we do limit our simple carb intake, but some people associate every source of carbohydrates with weight gain. The truth is that the body needs some carbs, as well as fats and protein. Too much restriction of carbs can lead to increased cravings and binging on sugars or other ...

What are Circadian Rhythms?
A circadian rhythm is a person’s internal body clock that regulates the 24-hour cycle of biological processes. The normal circadian clock is set by the light-dark cycle over a 24-hour period and it’s important in determine the sleeping and feeding patterns in humans. Most living things, including animals, plants and even microbes, have circadian rhythms. These rhythms are produced by natural factors within the body, but they are also affected by signals from the environment. Light is the main cue that influences circadian rhythms; although humans were once thought to be insensitive to the effects of light, it is now recognized as the ...
