Is Soybean Oil Paleo?

October 22, 2014 By Joel Runyon 1 Comment

The Quick Answer No. Soybean oil is not paleo. Why Isn’t Soybean Oil Paleo? Soybean oil is not paleo because it is made from soybeans (obviously), which are often very highly processed, GMO, disruptive to the body in many ways, and not paleo. Soybean oil does not provide enough health benefits to outweigh its harmful properties. Soybean oil has the following break-down of fatty acids: 23% mono-unsaturated fats 58% poly-unsaturated fats 16% saturated fats As you can see, soybean oil contains a high amount of PUFAs and a somewhat high amount of MUFAs. The good news about this is that its MUFAs could potentially be good ...

Are Vegetable Oils Paleo?

October 21, 2014 By Joel Runyon 3 Comments

The Quick Answer No. Vegetable oils aren’t paleo (although it does depend on which exact oil you’re talking about). The majority of vegetable oils are not considered paleo, while a select few are. Why Aren’t Vegetable Oils Paleo? When we think of vegetable oils, we are usually referring to one of the types below: Canola (rapeseed) oil Corn oil Soybean oil Rice bran oil Sunflower oil Safflower oil Peanut oil Cottonseed oil These vegetable oils are not paleo for a few reasons. They don’t have an ideal ratio of fatty acids. In other words, they don't have enough omega-3s to compete with their abundance of ...

Why Microwaves Aren’t Paleo (And Why They’re Dangerous)

October 20, 2014 By Joel Runyon 3 Comments

So, you want to know whether or not microwaves are paleo? The Quick Answer As you have probably guessed, microwaves are not paleo. Why Aren’t Microwaves Paleo? The answer seems obvious. I mean, beans and quinoa are off the table, so microwaving can’t possibly be acceptable, right? Well, think again, because the convenience and new technology of microwaves aren't the primary reasons for their classification as "non-paleo." The paleo diet does not shun things simply because they are new. It is obvious that microwaves are a relatively new piece of cooking technology and not something that Paleolithic people could have used, however, ...

Is Coconut Water Paleo?

October 13, 2014 By Justin Miller Leave a Comment

The Quick Answer Yes. Coconut water is paleo. Why Is Coconut Water Paleo? Coconut water is a clear liquid found in the center of young green coconuts. Although most cavemen didn’t have access to coconuts, some did, and that is one of the reasons it is considered paleo. However, cavemen having access to certain foods doesn’t necessarily make those foods paleo. Remember, a paleo approach to nutrition is all about healing your body from the inside out. Coconut water is considered paleo because of the beneficial nutrients it contains. Coconut water contains five key electrolytes that your body needs to function ...

Are Refined Oils Paleo?

October 12, 2014 By Joel Runyon Leave a Comment

The Quick Answer No. Refined oils are not paleo. Why Aren’t Refined Oils Paleo? Refined oils (usually grape seed oil, almond oil, sunflower oil, canola oil, safflower, and palm fruit oil) are not paleo because to refine an oil, you usually have to destroy the oil’s health-promoting properties and add additives to the oil. Many refined oils come from genetically modified plants and are full of preservatives. On top of this, people living in Paleolithic times did not have the technology to take a crop and turn it into a refined oil.  What Is A Refined Oil? For most commercial oils to be made, a period of oil extraction ...

Are Spices Paleo?

October 11, 2014 By Joel Runyon Leave a Comment

The Quick Answer Yes, spices are paleo. Spices are a natural way to add lots of flavor to paleo meals without adding any junk-like sugar or processed condiments. Plus many spices provide a lot of health benefits (of course this assumes you buy good quality spices that are free of weird chemical additives). Why Are Spices Paleo? There are a ton of different spices and nearly all of them are paleo. Spices are really just dried and ground plant foods that contain a lot of flavor. Examples of spices are cinnamon, thyme, oregano, basil, and curry. Most dried spices come from fresh herbs, flowers, or other sorts of ...

All types of fruit are paleo because they are natural, unprocessed foods that have a lot of health benefits to offer, including disease-fighting antioxidants, vitamins, fiber, and phytonutrients.
