Your Guide to Paleo Condiments
Paleo condiments are a hot topic. What’s Paleo-friendly and what’s not? Have you ever looked at the ingredients list on a bottle of store bought salad dressing? If not, you may be in for a surprise.
Here’s an ingredients label for a store-bought brand of French dressing.
Soybean and/or canola oil, high fructose corn syrup, AND sugar. Yum.
(I really hope my sarcasm came through on that statement 🙂 )
[color-box color=”blue”]A quick note – if you’re not already in the habit of doing so, it’s always a great idea to become familiar with looking at the ingredients label of anything that you buy in a package. Thankfully, the Paleo diet eliminates the need to buy too many items that are pre-packaged, but for those cases that do arise, it’s always a good practice to give a quick glance to the ingredients panel before purchase. There are some things that are almost guaranteed to be better for you (and better tasting) to make at home rather than buying at the store. Condiments are, by far, one of those things.
Therefore, we’ve rounded up some of our favorite condiment recipes from the site. Next time you find yourself searching out a bottle of ketchup, pull up this article and make your own instead. I can promise you there won’t be any high fructose corn syrup involved.
Paleo Condiments
This is one you’ll want to bookmark. Never spend money on store bought ketchup and mustard again. This recipe features only the things that should be in your mustard and ketchup – mustard powder and tomatoes.
Everyone should have a basic vinaigrette recipe in their collection. This one features extra virgin olive oil, garlic, dijon mustard, lime juice, vinegar, honey, and dried rosemary. Add some salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste and this dressing makes the perfect addition to any salad.
Almond butter plays a major role in this dressing. Do I even need to say more? I really don’t think so, but I will. Mix it with sesame oil, ginger, a touch of honey for sweetness, lime and garlic for a bit of zing and you have a delicious, Asian-influenced salad dressing. This recipe pairs it with a simple, crunchy cabbage salad, but feel free to branch out and put it on whatever sounds delicious to you. You won’t regret it!
If you have never tried to make your own Paleo mayonnaise before, you’re in for a treat. Not only is it super simple to make, but it is SO MUCH better for you than anything you could find at the store. This recipe gives you a foundational mayo recipe, but feel free to spice it up to fit your tastes! You could add garlic, your favorite herbs, chipotle chilis, or horseradish. Seriously, the variations are endless. What’s your favorite?
You didn’t think I’d forget the holy grail of all condiments, did you? Seriously, who doesn’t love guacamole? And you can put this stuff on anything! Top it on your burgers, dip veggies in it, pair it with tuna for a spin on tuna salad, or throw a spoonful (or 3…no one’s judging…) on your taco bowl. This recipe is so good you’ll want to make guac every night!
