Crowd Cow
Have you ever went to the grocery store and desired to know from where exactly the beef came? Or maybe you’ve desired to buy directly from a rancher, but the process is intimidating or not available where you live.
This is how Crowd Cow was born. Two friends, Josh and Ethan, had these same feelings. They decided to CrowdFund a cow, so that 50 people could each buy a little piece of a cow from a local farm. They built a website, and their first cow sold within 24 hours.
I think this speaks directly to the growing desire by the mainstream population for sustainably-sourced, high-quality meat. Crowd Cow wants “everyone to discover and enjoy the very best beef from local ranches and to make the experience convenient and fun.”
How Crowd Cow Works
Crowd Cow is built by friends for friends. It allows you to claim a share of a cow, rally your friends to join you, and eventually “tip the cow” – meaning enough shares are sold to purchase the cow. Through this method, you can buy exactly what you want – cuts and quantity – all online and have it delivered straight to your door.
Right on the homepage, you can see exactly what farm has a cow on the block. You can also see how much of the cow has sold, how much time is left for the sale, and how many shares of the cow remain.
Crowd Cow works with the very best ranches. They ensure that the ranchers meet certain criteria; they must have a commitment to sustainable agriculture, treat their animals well, use no antibiotics, and the beef is grass-fed and finished. They do this by personally visiting the sites to ensure that everything is in order.
My Experience with Crowd Cow
I was able to try out a few different cuts from Crowd Cow. The thing I love most about the company is that the beef I received was relatively local. To be exact, it came from Harlow Cattle Company – a ranch in Spanaway, Washington just 2.5 hours from where I live. They even provide the name of the rancher – Becky Harlow Weed – a 5th generation farmer. Having this degree of knowledge about the meat is important to me. It personalizes it and allows me to make a connection to a ranch in my area.
In my package, I received ground beef, short ribs, rib steak, and soup bones. They also included some French sea salt to accompany the steak. Score.
The ground beef is 80/20 and completely grass-fed and grass-finished. This mean that the cow was fed on grass throughout its whole life – which improves the nutrient profile of the meat. Specifically, grass-finished cows have a better omega 6 to omega 3 fatty acid ratio.
All of the beef is dry-aged. This ensures that the meat has better flavor and becomes more tender than meat that is not aged in this way. It’s almost guaranteed that any beef you buy from the grocery store has NOT been dry-aged. This is why Crowd Cow’s meat has more depth and a better taste profile than conventional meat.
The meat is shipped overnight and arrives frozen, vacuum-sealed, and in dry ice. Their website even includes tips for cooking and thawing the meat.
Shipping all across the US!
Great news – Crowd Cow can now ship all across the United States. This ensures that people all across the country have access to grass-fed beef!
The demand for high-quality, sustainably-raised meat is at an all-time high. Companies like Crowd Cow seek to fill this need. If you’re looking to buy from small operations, Crowd Cow makes it easy for you to get meat that tastes great and is better for you.
