Is Chocolate Paleo?

February 12, 2016 By Megan McGrane 1 Comment

chocolate-history

The short answer is maybe. The answer to this question truly depends on what version of chocolate you are consuming.  Let’s start with a better question: What is chocolate? Chocolate is derived from cocoa beans that come from the pods inside the fruit of the cacao tree. These beans, also called cacao nibs are roasted to bring about the deep rich and bitter flavor we know as chocolate. Naturally chocolate is a bitter rich flavor that is complex and perhaps different from the traditional ‘chocolate’ taste you may envision from childhood. Milk chocolate is likely not paleo, but perhaps dark chocolate and raw cacao are paleo. Are there ...

Are Bananas Paleo?

November 20, 2015 By Joel Runyon 1 Comment

bananas

Yes, bananas are Paleo. Bananas are one of the most commonly eaten fruits in the United States. It’s no surprise, considering they’re full of sugary sweetness that makes them the perfect addition to comfort foods like pancakes, bread, cookies and muffins. Bananas’ claim to fame is that they’re a great source of potassium and quick-releasing carbohydrates, which is one reason why they’re so loved by athletes. Potassium is a vital electrolyte that helps the body maintain fluid balance, heart health and muscular functioning, which means bananas are at the top of most people’s lists when they reach for a pre- or post-workout snack. But how ...

Is Bacon Paleo?

November 11, 2015 By Joel Runyon 1 Comment

bacon-cooker

Is bacon paleo? Bacon is Paleo, sometimes. It honestly really depends on the type. Is Bacon Paleo? Pork itself is Paleo (and turkey too, if you’re more inclined to eat turkey bacon). Many types of store-bought bacon contain chemicals and preservatives that are not Paleo. Pork is one of the few types of meat eaten across almost every continent on earth, including in some of the world’s healthiest areas. People living in the Mediterranean region, South and Central America, Europe and Asia all regularly eat pork as part of their overall healthy diets. Populations in countries like China, Costa Rica, Spain and Italy who usually don't ...

Are Coconuts Paleo?

April 29, 2015 By Joel Runyon Leave a Comment

The Quick Answer Yes, coconuts are paleo. This includes all parts of the coconuts, and all products made from the different parts: coconut milk, coconut water, coconut cream, coconut flour, dried (unsweetened) coconut chips/flakes, coconut oil and coconut butter. Why Are Coconuts Paleo? Coconuts are one of the most popular foods on the paleo diet – and for good reason. They are made of beneficial, healthy saturated fatty-acids and are high in potassium, B vitamins, fiber and other important nutrients too. Plus, they taste really good, are cheap and sustainable, and are easy to use in all kinds of ways! What will you find when ...

Is Olive Oil Paleo?

April 22, 2015 By Joel Runyon 1 Comment

The Quick Answer: Yes, olive oil is paleo. Why Is Olive Oil Paleo? Olive oil is a completely natural oil that is made up of mostly monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs). It’s a far better choice than a lot of refined polyunsaturated plant-oils, like soybean, canola or safflower oil – plus it contains considerable amounts of polyphenol antioxidants and vitamin E and K. All oils have the same fat content and calories (120 per tablespoon and about) so it’s not that olive oil has a superior nutrition profile that makes it better than many others oils, it has more to do with how olive oils is created and how it reacts to heat when ...

Are Pancakes Paleo?

April 15, 2015 By Joel Runyon 1 Comment

The Short Answer It completely depends on the kind of flour used to make the pancakes – some pancakes can be paleo, like the kinds made using coconut or almond meal, while most others are not. When people think of pancakes they are usually referring to the kind made with wheat flour, which is definitely not paleo. In fact no flour that is made of any grain – whether it’s whole wheat flour, rice, oat, etc. – is paleo be use grains themselves aren’t paleo. Why Are, and Aren’t, Pancakes Paleo? Most pancake recipes include: refined white flour, cane sugar, eggs, milk and maple syrup. As you can probably tell, some of these aren’t ...

Is Safflower Oil Paleo?

April 8, 2015 By Joel Runyon 1 Comment

The Quick Answer No. Safflower oil is not paleo. Why Isn’t Safflower Oil Paleo? Safflower oil is a kind of “refined” oil – and all refined oils are not paleo. Creating oil from a flower is a lengthy process as you can imagine – it’s definitely not one that people living in Paleolithic times could have done. Safflower is similar to other highly-processed vegetable oils like grape seed, sunflower, canola, and palm fruit oil. All of these oils go through extensive refining processes that usually destroy the oils’ health-promoting properties (if they even had any to begin with). This happens because high-heat methods used during ...

Is Sunflower Oil Paleo?

April 1, 2015 By Joel Runyon 2 Comments

The Quick Answer Is sunflower oil paleo? No. Sunflower oil is not paleo. Why Isn’t Sunflower Oil Paleo? Manufacturers of vegetable oils like sunflower oil have basically spent the last several decades trying to put saturated fats – especially the kinds from animal products like lard or butter– in a bad light. The public has been pretty mislead into thinking that saturated fats are the enemy, but that unsaturated fats and vegetable oils are healthy. We now know that this is far from the truth – it turns out that you actually need a fair dose of saturated fat to stay healthy. The fear of consuming saturated fats has led many people to ...

Check out our Paleo Diet Food List for an easy way to figure out what is/isn't Paleo. When it comes to paleo foods, one of the first rules of thumb is to avoid most things that come in a package.
