The NYT Opinion recently ran a piece on a PLoS One study that links increased sugar availability to increased rates of obesity and diabetes. One of our favorite things about paleo is the natural decrease in sugar consumption that it brings to most diets, simply because it means eating real foods. The study corroborates this approach.
The key point in the article is this: “Each 150 kilocalories/person/day increase in total calorie availability related to a 0.1 percent rise in diabetes prevalence (not significant), whereas a 150 kilocalories/person/day rise in sugar availability (one 12-ounce can of soft drink) was associated with a 1.1 ...

(Maybe) The World’s Best New York Steak Recipe
New York Steak Recipe made easy!
I’ve never met a person who didn’t love a well-made steak. Hell, I’ve even known vegetarians who’ve become meat eaters again just so they could enjoy a New York strip steak without all the guilt and rule-breaking.
When I was a kid, my dad, being the consummate bachelor, could cook three things: take-out Chinese, delivery pizza, and a New York strip steak. Now, don’t get me wrong, I’ll take a good chicken chow mein or a pepperoni pizza on any ‘cheat day’, but Dad’s steak was something to aspire to.
In my 15 years of being an avid cook, one of my ongoing goals has been to perfect my New York strip steak ...

Whole Roasted Fish
I’ve always loved lobster, crab, and scallops in any form. But I was a little so-so about eating fish of any kind. It just seemed boring, tasteless, and, well, fishy. But that all changed when I saw someone eating a whole fish at a favorite French bistro in San Francisco. It just looked cool. I mean, seriously, it’s a whole damn animal! It still looks like a fish! And I could smell its savory fragrance from two tables away. Ever since, I've been going frequently to the butcher or fishmonger to pick up a few red snappers or branzinis to roast for me and a couple friends.
In addition to the being the coolest looking dish, and being deliciously ...

Breakfast Apple Hash
Yes, bacon is awesome! But as awesome as it is, you have to keep your guard up.
Sugar is a common additive to bacon (look out for any ingredient with "-ose" at the end, such as dextrose), and making sure your bacon is nitrate-free should go without saying. For awesome UPG-approved bacon, check out U.S. Wellness Meats.
Now that my bacon disclaimer is out of the way...this recipe is delicious!
Breakfast Apple Hash
2 Eggs ((beaten))2 slices bacon ((cut into small strips))1 Apple ((peeled and chopped))5 Walnut (( halves))1 tbs Grass fed butter1/2 tsp Cinnamon ((or more as preferred))

Stalking The Paleo Diet In Dallas
The Dallas News recently ran a piece on the paleo diet and what it is. While nothing breathtaking, they trot out several of the familiar critiques of paleo:
“'If we look at our ancestors, they didn’t live very long.' And a recent article in Scientific American largely debunks the premise for the diet and whether it's truly paleo."
Still, they give several great testimonials of strict and super strict paleo dieters who stress results, showing once again that it always comes back to personal experimentation and experience:
“It works very well for people with autoimmune disorders … It’s amazing to see the improvement in health.”
“If you ...

The Ultimate Guide to Paleo Hard Cider – BiteSize Edition
This is a guest post by Jenna Forstrom.
What is Hard Cider?
Let’s go through the basics. Hard cider is a fermented alcoholic beverage made from fruit juice (traditionally apple juice, but other fruits are used as well). Hard cider shouldn’t be confused with “cider”, which is non-alcoholic. When sugar or extra fruit has been added and there is a longer secondary fermentation processes to increase alcoholic strength, hard cider becomes “apple wine.” “Ice cider” is made if the apples are frozen before or after they are harvested, and this has a higher alcohol concentration. Hard cider made with pear juice is called “perry.”
There are two ...

How Jim Brown Lost 130 Pounds on Paleo
We love paleo success stories.
Recently, we ran across one in the Huffington Post about Jim Brown, who lost 130 pounds eating paleo.
The turning point was when Jim picked up a copy of the Primal Blueprint by UPG favorite Mark Sisson
My close friend Ryan suggested I read a book by the name of Primal Blueprint by Mark Sisson about the paleo lifestyle. I figured I could eat meat and veggies and be happy with it. After diving headfirst into the book, I adopted a paleo way of eating. I found it to be very easy, and read every paleo book I could get my hands on. By my March physical, I had ...
